Department of Chemistry & Life Science

The Department of Chemistry & Life Science now offers three outstanding majors. Cadets may choose a Chemistry Major, Life Science Major, or Chemical Engineering Major. We have American Chemical Society certification of our Chemistry major and the Chemical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. We also offer a less rigorous major in Chemical Engineering Studies that is not accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Cadets interested in pursuing medical school should strongly consider majoring in one of our three majors as they provide the most in-depth preparation for graduate studies in medicine. All our majors emphasize science fundamentals, creative problem solving, and hands-on experimentation and design in order to develop students' understanding of the practical applications of science essential for officers in today's high-technology Army. Nearly all of our department electives focus on practical laboratory work integrated with the classroom instruction to improve the individual's fundamental understanding of complex concepts and processes. Particular emphasis is directed toward practical applications. Scientific maturation is expected, especially in the areas of experimental observations, organization and use of data, deductive reasoning, problem solving, logical decision making, technical writing ability, and delineation of conclusions.
