This course examines analytical and practical approaches to financial management with emphasis on effective financial counseling, personal decision-making, and ethical issues in personal finance. The course begins with an overview of financial planning and introduces personal accounting, net worth calculation, cash budgeting, insurance, investment, and taxes. These principles are subsequently applied in evaluating major purchases, real estate, securities, and financial options. The financial institutions section investigates the major sources of financial instruments which an investor might purchase, and determines the nature and purpose behind the issue of such securities as well as diversification and performance measures requiring familiarity with applied regression analysis (Excel). The final sections relate to estate planning and culminate in the development and presentation in a counseling option of the cadet's ability to evaluate life's major purchases, select financial securities, counsel subordinates, and choose between financial options.**This course is a pilot (has previously been taught and archived) and will need review by the Curriculum Committee NLT AY24-1 to continue.** | |||||||||

This course addresses most of the major personal financial planning issues that you will face as an individual and as an Army Leader. The course incorporates all of the latest concepts and procedures used in sound financial planning and effective money management. The course includes the principles of financial planning, budgeting and time value of money and progresses through investment alternatives, mutual fund selection and evaluation. Taxes, personal risk management, estate planning along with major purchase planning are covered during the course. The course culminates in development of a formal written financial plan based on the cadet?s projected future situation several years after graduation. Prerequisites include familiarity with applied statistics and regression analysis. Armed with the knowledge and tools from this course, SS391 will provide you a set of analytic tools and will help you develop a way of thinking which will assist you in making numerous decisions required of an Army officer. | |||||||||

These principles are subsequently applied in evaluating major purchases, real estate, securities, and financial options. The financial institutions section investigates the major sources of financial instruments which an investor might purchase, and determines the nature and purpose behind the issue of such securities. The final section analyzes portfolio theory, equilibrium in capital markets (market efficiency), diversification and performance measures requiring familiarity with applied regression analysis (Minitab or Excel). These lessons are subsequently applied in exercises that test the cadet?s ability to evaluate life?s major purchases, select financial securities, counsel subordinates, and choose between financial options. | |||||||||

Group project requires analysis and application of counseling concepts. Individual course project in which the cadet develops lifetime financial goals and strategies to obtain them-spreadsheet work is required. Compensatory time is given. |
