SCOPE
SS374 is a seminar course designed to challenge cadets to think about why East Asian actors ? states, non-state actors, organizations, and individuals ? do what they do, both within and beyond the region. Students will apply the social scientific method and various social science theories to explain how and why East Asian actors make certain policy choices. Students will explore how pursuits of national interests create competition, cooperation, and conflict across political, economic, and military spectrums. Cadets will integrate and apply knowledge to describe, explain, analyze, or predict international affairs and domestic political developments as well as identify implications and develop feasible policy options.

SCOPE
Seminar course designed to introduce the cadets to the politics and government in Japan and the Koreas. Students draw on an appreciation and understanding of culture, history, sociology, economic and political science foundations in studying the actors and relationships in Northeast Asia. Focusing on how ethnic, social, cultural, and economic factors determine state legitimacy and influence internal state choices, students explore the cooperation and competition between Japan, Korea and the U.S. The course incorporates an examination of US foreign policy toward Japan and Korea and explores the prospects for productive, stable relationships.

SCOPE
This is a lecture/seminar course designed to introduce the cadets to the politics and governments of the Koreas and Japan. The political institutions, ideology, culture, and history of these countries will be examined. Central course themes include state formation, stability, security, modernization, political economy, political culture, and international relations. This course builds on previous studies in political science, history, philosophy, and languages, and provides both a broad overview of general regional information, and specific discussions of current issues.
