Cadets are introduced to several theoretical perspectives intended to explain the structure of social stratification in the United States. The course examines the state of social inequality in the United States, with a focus on social class, integration, mobility, and equality of opportunity. Cadets explore individual and structural perspectives of social inequality. Cadets evaluate social issues, policies, and programs intended to influence social inequality. Throughout the course, cadets discuss the relevance of class, race, ethnicity, and gender on social opportunity and inequality. | |||||||||

In this sociology course, cadets will examine the interactive nature of the relationships between social inequality and the social experiences of race, gender, class, and ethnicity. The course focuses on the state of social inequality in the U.S. with respect to the distribution of wealth, power, occupational status, and social opportunity. Cadets will explore both past and present forces which contribute to social inequality and class structure in this country. In addition, cadets will learn concepts, theories, and perspectives which contribute to their ability to evaluate contemporary social issues, policies and programs which affect social inequality. Throughout the course, race, class, gender, and ethnicity will be discussed as critical categories of personal and social experience that affect all Americans. | |||||||||
