| This course offers a multidisciplinary examination of contemporary American families, with a special focus on the unique experiences of military families. Grounded in a sociological perspective, the course integrates insights from psychology, history, anthropology, biology, and economics to deepen understanding of the family as a social institution and its interactions with other institutions such as work, education, and the military. Cadets will analyze the historical and current forces shaping families, with particular attention to the challenges and dynamics faced by military families. | This course focuses on contemporary American families, with special emphasis on military families. It approaches the study of marriages and families from a scientific perspective, based on scholarship and research. Cadets will learn about the actual state of marriages and families in the United States, and particularly within the military population. This course uses the sociological perspective to analyze issues, as well as several other academic disciplines, such as psychology, anthropology, biology, physiology, and economics to provide additional information. Cadets will examine past and present forces that contribute to changes in the nature of marriage and families in the United States. They will explore the nature of relationships between the family and other major social institutions. | This course focuses on the social institution of the family in the contemporary United States, with some emphasis on changes in family patterns over time. Cadets will explore the dynamic relationships between the family and other social institutions such as the economy, education, and religion. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between the family and the military. Cadets will gain an appreciation of the diversity of family experiences throughout the U.S. through a focus on racial, ethnic, gender, and class differences. Through the application of research findings and sociological theories and concepts, cadets learn to analyze personal expectations with respect to marriage and family issues.
