MX400 is the Superintendent's capstone course. With its emphasis on each officer's duty to provide moral leadership, MX400 challenges cadets to become commissioned leaders of character who demonstrate virtue, honor, patriotism, and subordination to civilian authority. In MX400, cadets look both to the past and the future, reflecting on their own character-development experiences as part of the West Point Leader Development System (WPLDS), while also studying the enduring and emerging ethical challenges of the profession they are about to enter. MX400 empowers cadets to understand and embrace their ongoing development as leaders of character and their emerging identities as Army officers. Upon completion of MX400, each cadet should internalize their professional identity and feel confident in his or her ability to apply critical thinking in complex situations and present interdisciplinary solutions to complex military problems. MX400 supports the West Point Writing Program, as one of the two Writing-in-the-Profession courses, with the Pershing Reflective Essay. |

MX400 is the Superintendent's capstone course that requires cadets to reflect upon, integrate, and synthesize their experiences in the West Point Leader Development System (WPLDS) as they complete their transformation from cadet to officer. MX400 enables cadets to accept their unique role as a commissioned officer in the Army Profession, to appreciate how their West Point experience prepares them to thrive in a complex operating environment, and to improve their ability to solve complex military problems. Cadets will understand and apply the foundations of Officership, the Army Profession, and Mission Command. They will reflect upon and write about their West Point experience to assess and
improve their own development. Lastly, they will hone their professional skills of critical thinking, innovative thinking, and effective communication. MX400 uses the case study method to highlight future challenges and to practice interdisciplinary collaboration. MX400 provides an integrative challenge that
requires cadets to collaborate with peers to formulate and present interdisciplinary solutions to complex military problems. The recommendations are expected to synthesize concepts and ideas learned within WPLDS. Upon completion of MX400, each cadet should internalize his or her professional identity and feel confident in his or her ability to thrive in complex situations. MX400 supports the West Point Writing Program (Writing in the Profession) with the Pershing Essay. |

MX 400 is a capstone course that challenges cadets to reflect upon, integrate, and synthesize their experiences in the six Cadet Leader Development System domains as they commence the transformation to commissioned officership. Cadets will achieve a thorough intellectual understanding of the four clusters of expert knowledge of the military professional--military-technical, moral-ethical, political-cultural, and human development. Successful completion of this course will enable each cadet to achieve competence and confidence in a new self-identity in the four facets of the role of a commissioned officer--a Soldier, a leader of character, a servant of the Nation, and a member of the profession of arms. Each graduate will be capable of executing the fundamental practices of the military professional--the repetitive exercise of discretionary judgment in decision making and taking actions that fulfill the moral and legal responsibilities of commissioned officers. Upon graduation, each new 2LT will be fully prepared for the immediate challenges of junior officership and capable of a lifetime of professional growth as an officer in the United States Army.
