COURSE TITLE EFF YEAR EFF TERM DEPARTMENT CREDIT HOURS
ME491 MECHANICAL POWER PLANTS 2018 2 Civil and Mechanical Engineering 3.0 (BS=0.0, ET=3.0, MA=0.0)
SCOPE
An introductory course on internal combustion engines covering basic theory, analysis, design, testing, and evaluation of automotive powerplants. Course material is intended to provide an understanding of the guiding principles and competing demands associated with power generation on modern ground mobility systems. Main topics include thermodynamic cycles, engine subsystems, heat transfer, and emissions. Theory is verified with hands on experience in engines laboratory exercises and vehicle performance practicums utilizing a military vehicle. A semester long engineering project challenges cadets to design, analyze, and 3D print an engine component.
LESSONS: 34 @ 55 min (2.500 Att/wk) LABS: 4 @ 120 min
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
numerical methods (MATLAB), Computer aided design (SolidWorks), engineering design project (3D printing) with design studios scheduled
