Learning activities focus on situations Cadets are likely to encounter in Spanish society. Cadets are taught how to express simple ideas and basic needs, comprehend the language in everyday contexts, and read simplified texts and brief, authentic selections. In addition to speaking, listening and reading skills, Cadets learn how to write sentences, paragraphs and/or short compositions on familiar topics. Through readings and discussions, Cadets are introduced to the cultures and history of the Spanish-speaking world. Cadets acquire a command of basic Spanish vocabulary and gain a general understanding of how the language works, and they become able to apply that knowledge when learning other foreign languages.
