This course is a survey of French literature tracing its development from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. Cadets gain basic competence in the knowledge and comprehension of representative literary works and their relationship to the cultural context of French society. Selected examples of various literary genres are read, discussed, and analyzed. At the same time, cadets continue to develop greater proficiency in French. Video and film presentations supplement readings, where possible. Graded work may include giving oral presentations, writing short essays, or preparing a term paper.
