This course introduces cadets to a variety of issues affecting the nature and conduct of war in the geographic and cultural region bounded by Turco-Arabic languages. A special emphasis is to understand the utility of warfare in a specific social context, that of evolving Turco-Arabic methods of governance, military institutions, and military operations from the time of Muhammad to the Treaty of Karlowitz. Significant military issues in this geographically, demographically, ethnically, and culturally diverse region are explored to gain historical perspective into the various social, political, and religious legitimacies groups of people have exploited in the quest to dominate Islamicate civilizations from 600-1700 CE. | |||||||||

This course focuses on warfare in the Middle East from the time of the Crusades through the 20th Century with emphasis on several key variables affecting war: religion, culture, social expectations of conflict, and the unique environment of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. A survey of clashing military traditions of the region is followed by an examination of the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the impact of two World Wars on the nations of the Middle East and their military institutions. In the Cold War era, the Arab-Israeli Wars and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are examined, as are other regional conflicts including the Iran-Iraq War, Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom. | |||||||||
