The cause, nature, and occurrence frequency of natural hazards such as flooding, earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic activity will be examined. Emphasis will also be placed on how people perceive and respond to these hazards. Land use policies and practices in these hazard areas will also receive attention. Students participate in map based laboratory exercises and have the opportunity to write a short paper advising a government official how to mitigate local geohazards.
