EV385B | INTRO TO ENVIRON ENGR | 2003 | 1 | Geography and Environmental Engineering | 3.5 (BS=0.0, ET=3.5, MA=0.0)
SCOPE | |||||||||
This course introduces the cadet to the study of environmental engineering from a unit process and a materials balance approach. Through the study of water (transport, quality, drinking water treatment, and wastewater treatment); air (transport, quality, and pollutant minimization); and pollutant management (solid and hazardous wastes), the cadet is exposed to the breadth of the discipline. A laboratory experience is integral to the course. In the laboratory, water quality is defined and measures of physical, chemical, and biological quality are both discussed and measured. An introductory design problem is developed through the semester on a relevant topic.

SCOPE | |||||||||
The course introduces the cadet to the study of environmental engineering from a unit process and a materials balance approach. Through the study and design of water supply and treatment systems; the study of wastewater treatment systems and air pollution minimization technologies; and the management of solid and hazardous wastes, the cadet is exposed to the breadth of the discipline. A laboratory experience is integral to the course. In the laboratory, water quality is defined and measures of physical, chemical, and biological quality are both discussed and measured. Unit operations for water treatment systems are introduced, and a conventional drinking water treatment system is designed. An introduction to conventional wastewater treatment process is provided. Management and disposal processes for solid and hazardous waste are also introduced. A solid waste landfill siting is designed.
