SCOPE
This course surveys the history of drama from its roots in Ancient Athens to the present day. Representative examples from various periods and traditions introduce Cadets to this old and most public of literary genres, the direct ancestor of today?s most influential media: feature films and television series. Cadets study the ways in which history and human behavior have been theatrically represented and the history of performance. Topics may include the challenges of representing reality on the stage, the ethics of spectatorship, the power of dramatic speech, and the role of theater in forming a sense of community.

This course surveys significant plays from a variety of periods and traditions to give cadets an appreciation of a genre that exists as both written literature and creative interpretation. Works to be studied range from the classical tragedies of ancient Greece through the great products of the English renaissance to modern efforts by British and American playwrights. Although the primary focus rests upon the Anglo-American tradition, the course will not neglect dramatists from other countries and cultures.
