| SCOPE | |||||||||
| This course examines poetry from antiquity to the present day. Readings in the major types of poetry--lyric, narrative, and dramatic--introduce Cadets to the development of verse within a range of traditions. Cadets learn and practice the technical vocabulary of poetic analysis, encounter important critics who have shaped the study of poetry, and develop an aesthetic appreciation for the genre. Topics may include the role of poetry in expressing national consciousness, war poetry, and the transnational history of individual forms such as the sonnet. | |||||||||

| SCOPE | |||||||||
| Embracing a wide variety of authors, works, periods, traditions, and forms, this course considers the literary genre through which human beings have expressed their most intensely imaginative visions of themselves and the world, and connections between the two. Some consideration of poetics and prosody will complement the cadets' reading of verse that ranges from Japanese haiku through the Shakespearean sonnet to the free-verse creations of modern and contemporary poets. | |||||||||
