| This course surveys British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the eighteenth century. Readings in representative texts from the Old English, Medieval, Renaissance, and Neoclassical periods introduce Cadets to the development and complexity of the British tradition. Cadets explore the development of literary forms, British culture and history, and the history of the English language. Topics may include chivalry and the medieval warrior ethos, commerce and empire, and the eighteenth-century rise of the novel. | |||||||||

Cadets will encounter representative masterworks from the Old English, Medieval, Renaissance, and Neoclassical periods, exploring in the process the development of literary forms, the culture of the British Isles, and the English language itself. Possible areas of emphasis include narrative and lyric poetry from all these periods, drama from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the periodical essay from the Neoclassical period, and the emergence of the novel as a distinct form of literature in the eighteenth century. | |||||||||
