SCOPE
In this laboratory course cadets will further develop their knowledge and understanding of organic and inorganic syntheses, quantitative and qualitative instrumental analysis, and applications of physical chemistry principles to molecular structure and kinetics. They will carry out experiments based on current needs and applications of the Army. Cadets and faculty will also discuss current research and present their work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Library research and written reports are required. All cadets will complete an integrative experience group project that will investigate the social,political and economical implications of chemistry.

CH487 INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY 2005 1 Chemistry & Life Science 3.0 (BS=0.0, ET=0.0, MA=0.0)
SCOPE
This course provides further development of the necessary theoretical background and an introduction to the spectroscopic methods applied to the study of molecular structure and species identification. Topics include electronic and vibrational energy levels of polyatomic molecules, optical selection rules, absorption, fluorescence, and photodissociation. Several of the laboratory assignments are experiments that will be conducted directly in the Photonics Research Center. These experiments may include Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; Fourier transform and dispersive Raman spectroscopy, laser ablation, laser spectroscopy; and kinetics. Computer-based methods of data acquisition and analysis will be used throughout.
